One year on...

I've just noticed that my blog is a year old Today! According to my behind the scenes blogger admin panel thing I've made 50 posts over the last year which is pretty much a post a week! I'm not quite sure how that's happened but hopefully I can keep it up at the same rate.

This illustration appeared in the Los Angeles Times over the weekend for the cover of their real estate supplement.

Maneater

Nothing to do with Hall and Oates this. Not unless one of them has taken up gardening since the hits dried up. Well, I just felt the need to draw a huge man eating plant and this is the result.

Two Colour Robot

A work in progress image for my next screenprinting project - a set of A5 sized 'robot' postcards. January has been fairly busy so far. In the last couple of weeks I've done another 3 illustrations for Sainsbury's Magazine which will come out in April, 2 illustrations for New Scientist feature about Artificial voices (due out in a couple of weeks)and a press Ad for Vodafone which will appear in a number of different business publications (The Economist / FT etc) over the next few months. Alongside my screen printing projects & commercial work I'm planning to get something together to submit to the if you could do anything tomorrow project. Looks like I'm running out of time but I'll have to see what I can do!

My next silkscreen project

Most of my spare time recently has been spent working on stuff relating to my silkscreen night class. This is the next project :

It's 6 page concertina booklet printed in 2 colours. As you can see it's science related and it's basically a made up science experiment. click the image above to see it bigger or the image below for a small preview of the whole thing!

And finally, Some of my work is featured in Decembers edition of Computer Arts magazine in a feature about creating characters. Big thanks to Nick Spence for including my work in the article.

Superman Collage

Russian Collage

A quick collage using a few different elements: a found drawing of St. Basil's Cathedral in Red Square, Russian postmarks, various papers and my own line drawings. For many years I used different collage elements in my work but that kind of got lost when I began working digitally. It's something I've been trying to bring back into my work recently though I am finding it much harder to bring into my commercial work than it really should be!

Ivan the Iron Man

This image is a work in progress for a small collaborative project I'm working on with Linzie Hunter. If you hadn't already guessed, the theme for the project is 'Circus'. Here Ivan the Iron Man shows off one of his many great feats of strength!

Adventures in Science.

Childrens publishing has always been an interest of mine and perhaps in the future I will get a chance to do something in this area. These images are I suppose a little more 'child friendly' than some of my other work. This work is something I wanted to do for myself: just exploring a few themes that interest me as well as trying to simplify things visually. I've always been a believer in 'less is more' but for some reason I sometimes find it difficult to make that happen in my own work. With these images I spent a good few hours adding things in and then taking them out again. It really is a battle sometimes but I suppose you need to trust your own instincts in the end.

El Presidente

A Latin American style dictator today. With this and my 'war' image below it looks like I've been having a bit of an agression filled week! In reality it's been very calm and civilised.

All men are brothers...

A personal experiment I did this week.

The quote is one of the many great one-liners by The League against Tedium a.k.a commedian Simon Munnery.

Journey to the stars...and beyond!

Hello and welcome to the Loopland news blog. I will be using this blog to run alongside my website as a place to showcase recent work & personal experiments and other related news that might be of interest. Hopefully it will also be a useful documentation of my creative process and development (for me at least anyway!).

The First image on my blog is a personal experiment which I did recently. I've been interested lately in introducing textures/found papers and more natural elements into my work. If you hadn't already guessed I work digitally (using Adobe Photoshop) but I am keen to try and keep a fair amount of my process anchored in more traditional methods. This means I draw with a pencil, on paper!
