Panic!

For the Daily Mail's Femail column, this about the media-fuelled hysteria surrounding the swine flu pandemic (and countless other things that we like to worry about).

Below is one of my rejected roughs for the same article. I quite liked the idea of drawing people in all different kinds of protective clothing so I'll develop this when I get the chance.

Connected Cars & other work

I am afraid I have been 'blog lazy' for the last month or so. Here's a taste of what I've been up to. Firstly, an illustration for the Economist all about "The Connected Car". This was commissioned by Sue Vago. Thanks Sue! If you want to find out more about the latest in automotive technology then you can read the article on the Economist website.

I've also been working fairly regularly with the Daily Mail recently. I've been doing illustrations for their Femail section. Thanks to Craig Gunn for the commissions. This one was all about marriage..(yes,really!)

I've also been doing more work for Don Morrisons Powerdown column in Power Magazine. Thanks again to Darren Long for these commissions.

I am getting carried away here but I will make another little update on Monday!

Problem Solving 101

By Ken Watanabe

Released soon, this is a rather splendid book that I had the pleasure to work on last year. In addition to working on the cover I also drew 30 images for the interior of the book. Working closely with the author Ken Watanabe I had lots of fun bringing some of the characters to life.

From Penguin Books :

"Ken Watanabe originally wrote Problem Solving 101 for Japanese schoolchildren. His goal was to help shift the focus in Japanese education from memorization to critical thinking, by adapting some of the techniques he had learned as an elite McKinsey consultant.

He was amazed to discover that adults were hungry for his fun and easy guide to problem solving and decision making. The book became a surprise Japanese bestseller, with more than 370,000 in print after six months. Now American businesspeople can also use it to master some powerful skills."

Buy it on Amazon.com , Barnes and Noble , Borders

Here is a little preview of some of the characters in the book that will help you get to the bottom of your problems.

Famous in the Seventies

A couple of pieces I did in recent months for Don Morrison's Powerdown column in the October/November issues of Power Magazine. The first image below is about Celebrity Endorsements.

This one, again for the Powerdown column, runs alongside an article entitled 'Thunder into China' and is all about the current financial crisis that is taking hold around the world. You may have heard something about this....I think it was on the news.

End Petlessness Wallscape

After the success of last years End Petlessness Campaign for the Oregon Humane Society It was really good to hear that they wanted to extend the campaign for another year. Here's a huge wallscape that's currently on display in downtown Portland. I also hear that the End Petlessness campaign has made it into the Print Design Annual 2008 and the international edition of Luerzer's Archive.

Many thanks to Brian Dixon at Leopold Ketel & Partners for the photograph. Brian is one the brains behind the project.

End Petlessness

During the summer months I drew a lot of dogs, cats, and bunnies as part of the 'End Petlessness' campaign for the Oregon Humane Society. The campaign was devised by the creative team at Leopold Ketel & Partners in Portland to raise awareness of the Oregon Humane Society and of course to encourage more people to adopt pets.

I also spent a lot of time working on a 30 second TV commercial for the campaign which has been airing in Oregon for the last few weeks:

Odds on Favourite.

I just finished this one last week for Joel at Aspect media. An illustration for the letters page of "Close Up" magazine, which is produced for Ladbrokes the high street bookmaker. The main letter in this issue is full of madcap betting tactics on various different sports. I still don't know anything about the world of betting but I had lots of fun doing this one.

Keeping up with the Joneses.

This was for Sainsbury's Magazine about moving into a new area and the pressure of keeping up with your neighbours. Personally I'm quite ok with the fact that my neighbours appliances are newer and better than mine.

I have just made a small site update to my portfolio with six new images. In other news you can see a few bits of my work in the current issue of Advanced Photoshop in their "The Ultimate Portfolio" feature.

One year on...

I've just noticed that my blog is a year old Today! According to my behind the scenes blogger admin panel thing I've made 50 posts over the last year which is pretty much a post a week! I'm not quite sure how that's happened but hopefully I can keep it up at the same rate.

This illustration appeared in the Los Angeles Times over the weekend for the cover of their real estate supplement.
